Botswana is known for its abundant wildlife, and animals can often be found crossing the roads, especially in and around national parks and reserves. Exercise caution and drive carefully to avoid collisions with animals, particularly at dawn and dusk when wildlife is more active. Moreover, if you plan to explore national parks or remote areas, it's advisable to have some off-road driving experience and ensure you have a well-equipped 4x4 vehicle. Some areas may require navigation skills and adequate preparation for self-guided game drives.

In Botswana, the minimum age required to hire a car is 18 years. However, keep in mind that the specific age requirements may differ depending on the supplier. Therefore, it is always recommended to check your car hire company’s regulations before booking. For individuals under the age of 25, most car hire companies impose a local fee known as a young driver surcharge. The surcharge amount depends on the company you are hiring from.

Typically in Botswana, the petrol price is relatively low, and you can expect to pay around P14.5 (£0.85) per litre and about P55 (£3.25) per gallon during your stay. However, keep in mind that these prices are subject to change, and it’s recommended you check with local sources or reputable websites for the most up-to-date and accurate petrol prices in Botswana.

The speed limit within urban areas, towns and cities such as the capital, Gaborone, is generally 60 km/h (37 mph). You will often find speed limit signs posted to indicate this restriction. When driving on rural roads outside urban areas, the speed limit is typically 100 km/h (62 mph). Note that on some well-maintained national roads, the speed limit may be increased to 120 km/h (74 mph), but it is essential to observe the posted speed limit signs.
