Boston car rental experiences: the best tips from KAYAK users

Insights shared by verified travelers who rented a car in Boston
Verified travelerJun 2026
I would take the Toll option. With Boston traffic, it is much easier to use alternative roads.
AmyJul 2026
I would almost take an uber to a rental car place outside of Logan airport. Takes forever to get to airport rental car center and it’s a bit chaotic bringing the car back if you’ve never been there before. Although guys in the return area at garage were very helpful and friendly
Verified travelerJul 2026
Be sure to check in on the first floor. We didn’t know that prior to arriving to pick up the car.
KaiAug 2026
You need to either hören a transponder or make sure to avoid toll roads if you don't!
Verified travelerJun 2026
Don't rent a car in Boston unless you're spending significant time in the suburbs.
BrandonMay 2026
Rent a crossover or smaller if you plan on driving in the city at all. Avis didn't have the small SUV we rented and gave us a large Traverse instead and it was too large to even fit in the driveway of our B&B.
Verified travelerMay 2026
Depends on your travel plans but I would suggest nothing large. Parking is tight in Boston.
JocelyneDec 2025
Preselect your car. It’s a great option to beat the line!
Verified travelerJun 2025
If you have your credit card handy, check in online b4 you get the counter/rep you will be amazed at the speed you be out of their way.
Verified travelerAug 2025
Watch for tollroads they add up quick
Verified travelerJun 2025
Not easy to find gas stations. Streets are very hard to navigate, and very crowded. I hope never to drive there again. I was glad to have a small SUV rather than a bigger one
SarahJul 2025
Yes that any additional insurance they try and sell you is not necessary and adds an additional cost burden
Verified travelerMay 2025
Don’t get the toll pass just because the counter insists.
Verified travelerDec 2024
Be prepared for airport taxes being 1/2 the amount of the rental .
CarolynNov 2024
Get the EZ pass. The Mass Pike is just off the airport, and you will almost certainly wind up on a toll road at some point.
Verified travelerOct 2024
270 atlantic ave - go to office on ground before going to 7th floor when picking up the car
Verified travelerSep 2024
Don’t necessarily get the toll pass. You can get around without it.
Verified travelerOct 2024
Don’t use Budget. Traffic in downtown Boston is insane and people do not follow the rules of the road. Be careful and budget a lot of time to get around.
DanAug 2024
Good to know there is a shuttle to the car rental pickup.
Verified travelerAug 2024
Off site rental was worth the savings for me.
Verified travelerAug 2024
1. Allow tons of time (1.5 hours) to pick up your car. 2. Know that you need extra insurance in MA and will have to pay for EZPass. 3. Know that Hertz doesn’t allow the spouse to drive for free unless you book under the Gold Plus member’s name. (My spouse is a member but they wouldn’t count it because I made the reservation.)
MichaelAug 2024
Car rental is offsite and takes about 5 minutes on bus to get your car
Verified travelerJul 2024
You prob don’t need toll passes for most of your driving in Boston.
CarlJul 2024
Get something that can handle very bumpy roads !
Verified travelerAug 2024
Book a smaller car and get fast break.
Verified travelerAug 2024
Fuel up away from airport
JAug 2024
Do not rent an electric vehicle. Hard to locate compatible charging stations and once found they take so long to charge.
CabinMay 2024
Take a video of the outside of the car as you walk around looking for previous damage. Also, check all the windows and air conditioning settings for proper operation. Be sure to switch the A/C from floor to dash vents to defroster.
RicardoApr 2024
Be sure to lock in advance the type of vehicle you want, and the type of fuel. Make it very clear, especially if you have to go out of town.
Verified travelerApr 2024
Go early. Expect to spend a good chunk of time there. Be nice to the agents, they are doing their best.
Verified travelerMay 2024
Don’t get the toll pass unless you don’t have a smartphone. There’s ways around tolls here.
Verified travelerMar 2024
Check wiper fluid before you drive it off the lot
Verified travelerMar 2024
Bostons Toll to exit the airport is 1.50$, you will be badgered to buy there $30 toll scan pass or be threatened with additional fees.
JimJan 2024
Boston traffic is as expected. Keep your wits about you, be patient, and all will be fine. Don't be on "vacation" behind the wheel. Stay focused
Verified travelerJan 2024
Watch for one way streets that will require you to drive around the block to get access to garage.
Verified travelerJan 2024
All enterprises close at 5pm. Be mindful when you book your rental.
Verified travelerSep 2023
Save A LOT by renting downtown, not at the airport. If you haven't been in Boston for a while, be prepared not to have any idea where you are.
JohnOct 2023
We were for the most part ok using a map on Apple CarPlay. We missed a few turns but overall the traffic was pretty smooth.
charles allenNov 2023
Make sure you have gps and don't hesitate to use
Verified travelerOct 2023
To get to the Rental Car Center from the BOS Airport, locate rental cars, take the blue Massport shuttle bus and it will announce Rental Car Center because a lot of us on the bus were not entirely sure where to go to rent our cars. Beware when renting from Thrifty from the Boston Airport.
Verified travelerNov 2023
Check the quality of your car seat and your child’s fit in the car seat before leaving the lot to pick them up. Bring them with you to pick up the car if possible.
Verified travelerNov 2023
If you're driving around Bostin, make sure to open the toll pass on the windshield. Plan ahead. It's a city! Traffic snarls are common.
AbieNov 2023
Give a call to the rental center to see what is actually in their inventory before your trip.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Plan plenty of time between the airport and rental center. I would plan an hour each way
Verified travelerSep 2023
We used the car for a day trip outside Boston. Parking in Boston is difficult.
Verified travelerOct 2023
Follow the signs, the rental place is offside so you take a bus.
Verified travelerSep 2023
Good traffic flow but long queues heading south from Boston
Verified travelerSep 2023
Be careful leaving airport and plan for traffic.
HalSep 2023
Make sure you know the time they close.
JoeSep 2023
Give yourself lots of extra time for traffic
Verified travelerOct 2023
Be flexible renting from this location.
Verified travelerJun 2023
While I don't recommend driving in the city of Boston, it was nice to have a car to drive outside of Boston. We enjoyed our time in Boston walking most of the time. On our last day in Boston we used a rental car to drive through New Hampshire and Maine.
EddieJul 2023
Amazing! Great selection of cars, easy pick up and drop off, VERY CLEAN and in great condition. Best value for a luxury SUV rental we have ever had!
stevenJun 2023
Get Avis, Budget group as they have 5 or 6 people working booth, so line not long.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Don’t rent from Avis, we would recommend Hertz.
MartinJul 2023
If you aren’t familiar with Boston, have your GPS ready. It can be confusing. Also, there are a lot of one way streets, so watch the signs. You always have to be aware of which lane to be in. You might actually have to switch lanes frequently just to drive straight ahead, as lanes that were drive straight lanes turn into turn lanes.
Verified travelerJul 2023
Give yourself extra time as all rental cars are off property. You have to take a blue rental car bus to the center and then make sure you get on the correct blue bus when returning (as they go to different terminals at Logan).
Verified travelerJul 2023
The sumner tunnel is closed. So make sure you tell who ever you’re meeting that it will take a little longer.
AshishJul 2023
To get to rental station from shuttle could take about 30 minutes- to an hour to reach so plan accordingly
Verified travelerAug 2023
If you have a preference for electric or gasoline say so upfront. Be patient and prepared for lots of traffic.
SamJun 2023
Don’t use Dollar/Thrifty unless you’re prepared to wait! It’s a good deal financially, but a bit time suck.
DanielJul 2023
Show up 3 hours early to get a rental if you want to keep your schedule
ChiaraAug 2023
Ensure that an adequate number of staff is available to amante hockey pick up
Verified travelerAug 2023
Give yourself a lot of time to pick up the car
Verified travelerJun 2023
Allow extra time for shuttle to car rental hub.
Verified travelerAug 2023
Be sure to double check invoice
MorganJun 2023
I rented a car to drive home to ME so it’s a non issue but Boston is an extremely difficult city to drive in if you’ve never been here before. There is minimal signage and people from Massachusetts drive very differently. When they want to merge they just do. You must be on the defense at all times. There is always traffic too. You do not need a car if staying in the city proper in fact I’d recommend against it. Between the T and Uber and really just walking, you can get everywhere you need to, plus there really isn’t any parking except expensive garages if you’re lucky enough to find one. And if you’re renting from the airport to go elsewhere you’re fine with GPS. But with GPS trying to find something downtown? Good luck. You’ll be stuck in traffic for days and never find what you’re looking for. If you’re renting a car to drive to the cape especially in busy season I hope your flight is very early or late because you will be stuck in traffic for hours as well
Verified travelerMay 2023
Parking was the worst. You might as well Uber or bike everywhere. Driving was interesting as I'm used to lanes and there aren't many lanes here; the roads kind of just throw you in there and see who wins lol. The drivers are pretty nice though and easy to flow with. The roads were very clean and in good condition.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Driving is very challenging in Boston. Many roads that are underground and then have to double back to get on the proper highway. Actually, my Google maps did a reasonable job considering all the underground transportation.
Verified travelerMay 2023
Be patient! And careful on the dropoff not to take the keys with you when you drop the car, there is a $250 charge for doing that.

KAYAK’s top tips for renting a car in Boston

  • For exploring the numerous sights contained in this historic city, as well as the expanse of the US eastern seaboard, a car hire in Boston is your best bet for total flexibility, convenience and coverage. A walk along the Freedom Trail introduces you to some of the sites and memorials connected to its colonial past. At Faneuil Hall and its adjacent Marketplace, you can explore further before indulging in some retail therapy all before lunchtime. Concord, Massachusetts, lies some 25 miles along the I-90E and is home to some revered Revolutionary War battlefields and monuments, which are worth exploring.
  • When making your flight plans, you will discover that Boston’s Logan Airport (BOS) has a Car Hire Centre featuring a host of national and international companies, such as National, Dollar and Thrifty. A free shuttle bus transports you to the multi-storey garage where you can pick-up your vehicle. These blue and white buses depart from each terminal every 5min or so, and if you have difficulty finding them, seek out the nearest Information Desk or find a courtesy phone and ask for assistance.
  • Once you get the hang of opposite-side driving and the massive multi-lane Boston highways, driving your Boston car hire should be a pleasurable experience. Having a sat nav as an extra is ideal to avoid losing your way and helps with navigating the inevitable traffic congestion you are sure to encounter at some point on the road. Jaywalking pedestrians, along with bicycles and motorbikes, weaving through vehicle lanes are common here, so always drive with caution and double check your mirrors to avoid accidents.
  • The city of Boston is known for its rush hour traffic, especially along the corridors of the I-90 and I-93 interstate highways and the Route 1 and 28 intrastate highways. The morning rush here can last anywhere from 6:00-9:00 in certain areas and the evening surge is heaviest during the corresponding evening hours (18:00-21:00). Sports, entertainment and special events can complicate matters further and snowstorms are common, so reserve some snow shoes for your Boston car hire when visiting in the winter.
  • 25% of our users found rental cars in Boston for 231 ﷼ or less
  • Small rental cars in Boston are around 65% cheaper than other car types, on average

It was great, except when i was exited with my vehicle, one of the agent was very disrespectful and underestimate me as a customer. when i was leaving with my own vehicle he dare to tell me that was not my vehicle he questioned that i was leaving with Alamo vehicle even though i presented my registration. However, i was with my daughter and i was in a good mood i did not start a scene.

Very good last minute prices. The cleanliness of the car wasn't great, especially inside. But the workers were nice and the rental experience was seamless. Picking up and dropping off at Boston airport is a challenge, but Alamo can't be blamed for that.

The pickup process was chaotic. It was written on my booking confirmation (after I completed pre-check in paperwork online) that I would go to the Fastbreak counter to get my car - this was not correct and I almost had to go back to the other check in counter that had a very long line. There was also a quarter tank of gas in the car and I had along trip ahead of me that night so having to stop for gas wasn’t ideal.

The pickup and drop-off were both easy. There was damage to the vehicle, however, that had not been documented. The gas tank was also slightly less than full (noticeably so) but the gauge read full when I returned it but I was charged for refueling for some inexplicable reason. I had to call and have that charge removed but I won't rent from Avis again in the near future based on these experiences.

They did not have the vehicle class I reserved at the time of pickup. They charged me for the e-toll premium service and did not offer the standard toll option even when I asked about the high price. And finally, the vehicle was provided with less fuel AND returned with a full tank, but despite that the receipt reflected that the vehicle was returned short on gas and I had to pay a fuel fee. I was able to get them to agree to refund me the fuel fee, but only after calling them and providing photos, which I had thankfully taken. This was the worst rental experience I have ever had.

Overall I thought it was a good experience. Was 39 mins late with drop off due to traffic and was charged an extra day. Was told about “all the tolls” and encouraged to purchase the toll package and did not go over a single toll bridge. Had explained my travel to the representative and she was insistent on my purchasing the package. Package cost me $60 and no toll bridge crossed. Other than these two curious actions the experience was acceptable.

Prior to picking up car, it was impossible to check-in early and choose the car; website was useless and didn't work. Calling "customer support" was worse, if not down right pathetic. Wasn't interested in helping; was pushing to cancel reservation and move into a new one at a much higher price. Could not guarantee what type of car I'd be getting nor it's class.

The pick up experience was terrible. There was a situation with flight cancellations, from what I heard other customers say, which affected the pick up times of several customers. This was not communicated by any of the Dollar management team. As a result, many customers were left wondering what was happening with the bottleneck at the booth. The Dollar employees at the booth were inundated with frustrated customers who did not have their vehicles. Upper management should have communicated clearly as to why this was happening. For a positive, I liked the ease of drop off when I returned my vehicle.

Dollar would not accept my member number at the counter because I had rented through a third party. Thus, I had to pay for my spouse to be a secondary driver. This was the second time I’ve had problems with Dollar at the counter.

The express pick up process was confusing and could have been much more smooth. I’ve done the express pick up on an app before and it was easy and clear. But with Dollar at Logan, the app didn’t provide clear instructions on where to go so I ended up standing in a short line. Overall it was a fairly quick but I paid the extra money to skip the counter, which was definitely not worth the extra cost.
