Top tips for renting a car in Réunion

  • Booking car hire in Réunion is recommended for anyone who wants to explore beyond the main towns and cities. Public transport is generally limited to these areas, so if you want to visit the highlands, Réunion’s volcanoes and calderas, having your own vehicle is the best way to go. You can drive from Saint-Denis, the island's capital, to the lovely port town of Saint-Pierre on the other side of the island in roughly 1 hour.
  • You'll want to take the most caution while driving in the highlands in Réunion. If you head into the mountains, be prepared for roads that are narrow, steep and winding. Be aware that on the side of many of these roads in the mountains, there are deep storm drains. These help the roads cope with heavy rainfall but can also pose a hazard to unaware drivers.
  • You will most likely arrive in Réunion at La Réunion Roland Garros Airport (RUN), located near Saint-Denis. Here you can find a range of local and international companies. You'll find all the desks for each company in the same place, close to the luggage reclaim area. Desks are usually staffed from the first flight of the day to the last, and vehicles are located on site, just a short walk from the terminal.
  • If you're visiting Réunion with children, be aware that children under the age of 12 aren't allowed to sit in the front seat. They should also be in a child restraint or booster seat appropriate for their height and weight. Generally, children taller than 135 cm or over the age of 10 can sit in the back without a car seat. Most companies offering car hire in Réunion can also offer car seats for children.
  • Small rental cars in Réunion are around 29% cheaper than other car types, on average

  • What is driving like in Réunion?

Réunion generally follows French driving laws. They drive on the right and the blood alcohol limit is 0.05%. Even with their storm drains, heavy rains can cause landslides that lead to road closures during cyclone season. This is especially true on the island's mountain roads. Outside of these situations, driving conditions in Réunion are usually very good and you'll find driving along the coastal motorways easy. It can get quite busy in the summer months. You may find that you prefer to park on the outskirts of Saint-Denis, as this is where traffic will be busiest. There'll usually be more manual vehicles available, so if you want an automatic, book well in advance.

  • How old do you have to be to hire a car in Réunion?

You'll usually need to be at least 21 years old to book car hire in Réunion. Some Réunion car hire companies will also charge a 'young drivers fee' to drivers under 25. You may also find that certain vehicle types, such as luxury cars, cannot be booked if you are under 25. You should bring your driving licence and International Driving Permit when you pick up the vehicle. You'll also need your debit or credit card and may be asked for additional ID such as your passport.

  • How are petrol prices in Réunion?

Petrol costs around €6.80 (£5.90) per gallon and roughly €1.70 (£1.50) per litre. Petrol stations are relatively easy to find, especially along the coastal roads. Bear in mind that there aren't any petrol stations right next to the airport, so if you need to return your car with a full tank, make sure you know where the closest station on your route is.

  • What are the speed limits in Réunion?

The speed limit in Réunion is most often 50 km/h (30 mph) in cities and 90 km/h (55 mph) on rural roads. As you drive up into the mountains, you'll often find the speed limit drops to 30 km/h (18 mph). On the highway, you can usually drive up to 110 km/h (68 mph). Due to Réunion's small size and varied geography, speed limits can change quickly, so always keep a close watch for signs. Additionally, you should be prepared to drive below the speed limit in heavy rain.
